Nicholai-do

The largest cathedral in Japan

Completed in 1891, this is the cathedral of the Japanese Orthodox Church. Its official name is Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral.
With a building area of about 800 square meters, it is the first and largest authentic Byzantine-style church building in Japan, featuring a 35-meter-high dome roof clad in greenish blue.

Because of its location on the Surugadai hill, the dome could be seen from a distance during the Meiji period, and it occupied an important position in the landscape of the Ochanomizu neighborhood.

After being severely damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake, the structure was partially reconfigured and restored to its current state. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

Russian architect Mikhail Shturpov was in charge of the original design, and Josiah Conder, a foreigner who had opened a private architectural design firm in Japan, was in charge of the implementation design.

The plan is a Byzantine-style building in the shape of a Greek cross, constructed of brick. The central dome is approximately 35 meters high, and there is a 38 meter-high bell tower.
