Shinjuku Gyoen

A combination of a Japanese garden, an English landscape garden, a French-style landscaped garden, and a large greenhouse in a space of about 58 hectares, the park is an imperial garden open to the public. There are many kinds of trees, with more than 10,000.

There are approximately 1,300 cherry trees of 65 varieties, and the park has been selected as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. From late March to early April, when the Someiyoshino cherry trees are at their best in spring, the park is crowded with many tourists as a cherry blossom viewing spot.

Yaezakura, a variety of cherry trees such as yohyo, are at their best from mid-April to late April.

In the rose beds, about 500 distinctive flowers of 110 varieties are in full bloom.

Originally the site of the former residence of the Naito family of the Shinano Takato domain in the Edo period, the Shinjuku Botanical Garden was opened to the public in 1879.

The Japanese-style garden with the “Tamamo Pond” at its center is the remains of the Naito family’s “Tamagawa-en” garden, which was completed in 1772.

The large greenhouse with many greenhouse plants was the largest in the East when it was completed in 1958, and was reopened in 2012.

The former Western-style wooden building was built in 1896 as a resting place for the Emperor and members of the Imperial Family, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

It is based on the stick style popular in 19th century America, and has been repeatedly extended.
